OK, that's great. But that is not why you are here. You're here because you are interested in learning more about the ACS and ARS. These product features are very powerful when used the right way. However, before we explore those in greater detail it is important not to overlook the balance of the Evolve IQ Controller features. These include:
- Elimination of hardness, iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide as well as correction of pH
- A patented chlorine generating technology that sanitizes the system's media
- Low salt and service alarm notification
- Dealer name embedded in programming
- Vacation mode setting
All right, let's get back to why you are here: the automatic cycle sequence (ACS) and alternate regeneration sequence (ARS). What are they?
Through this highly versatile control you have the ability not only to change the regeneration cycle sequence, but control the time these cycles occur. This is automatic cycle sequence. Let's explain this more.
Quite frankly, you can put any sequence in any order you want. If desired, you could program a unit for three backwashes, two brine and rinse and three brine tank fills... for any combination of time.
There are up to 14 positions available to us, for any length of time. So theoretically, we have up to a 14 position controller. That is ACS.
For instance, salt efficiency is huge these days, not to mention water usage. With these in mind, let's set up a very efficient water conditioner. The following is a regeneration sequence that we could set up for a one cubic foot conditioner.
| Regeneration Sequence #1 |
| Cycle 1 |
Brine fill (brine make up prior to regeneration keeps tank cleaner) Using 4.5 lbs. salt per regeneration (1.5 gallons) |

Set first cycle position with + and - buttons. |
| Cycle 2 |
4 hour delay to make salt brine |
| Cycle 3 |
Backwash. 4 Minutes @ 2 GPM |
| Cycle 4 |
Brine and slow rinse (down flow)*. 45 Minutes @ 18 GPM total |
| Cycle 5 |
Rapid rinse. 2 Minutes @ 2 GPM |
| Cycle 6 |
Return to service position |
With this regeneration configuration our one cubic foot unit would use approximately 24 gallons of water at 4.5 lbs salt setting rendering us 18,000 grains of capacity. These are realistic, attainable numbers. And remember we can change the sequence of the cycles, and the times of each, in any manner we want. That is the beauty of the ACS.
Now that sounds good, right, but in the real world there are trade offs. Backwashing for four minutes might not be enough time to thoroughly loosen up the media bed, or at higher flow rates we might experience hardness leakage in light of the reduced salt setting. When softeners and conditioners are set like this they have a tendency over time to lose some capacity. In order to bring the media back to full capacity, we can use the Alternate Regeneration Sequence (ARS) feature.
Let's say we program a regeneration that occurs after a predetermined amount of time. Say our one cubic foot unit uses the Regeneration Sequence #1 for 5 consecutive regenerations, then on the 6th system regeneration, we change the regeneration sequence to do an additional cleaning and brining to help "clean up" the media. With the Evolve controller we can program this second regeneration sequence to initiate every 6th regeneration.
| Alternate Regeneration Sequence #2 |
| Cycle 1 |
Brine fill. Using 9 lbs. salt per regeneration (3 Gallons) |

Turn alternate regeneration sequence by number of regens ON or OFF with + and - buttons.
Adjustable from 1-99 regens or OFF. Default is OFF.

| Cycle 2 |

| Cycle 3 |
Backwash. 12 minutes @ 2 GPM |
| Cycle 4 |
Brine and slow rinse (down flow)*. 60 minutes @ 24 gallons total) |
| Cycle 5 |

| Cycle 6 |

The second regeneration configuration of our one cubic foot unit would use approximately 59 gallons of water at a 9 pound salt setting, and at 18,000 grains of capacity. This is more of a conventional salt and water setting. Note that the capacity did not change. We are just giving the unit an extra boost to help the media remain at capacity.
In this particular case, the water conditioner regenerates with the Regeneration Sequence #1 for 5 consecutive regenerations, and then on the 6th regeneration it would use the Alternate Regeneration Sequence #2.
By using the alternate regeneration sequence, for every six regenerations we are saving 50% of water usage and 42% of salt usage, as compared to conventional softener settings. That’s green, baby!
Remember these 6 cycles (actually you have up to 14) can be put in any sequence, in any order. If you wanted to have two backwashes and three rinses, or two pauses (delay), you can do that. That is ARS!
This ARS feature can also be used with filters. For example:
Say you had a greensand plus filter and you wanted to condition the media using the chlorine generator feature, but didn't want to draw it in each time it regenerates. You would simply program the first regeneration as follows: |
| Regeneration Sequence #1 |
| Cycle 1 |
Backwash. 12 Minutes |
| Cycle 2 |
Rapid Rinse. 4 Minutes |
Then program the second regeneration as follows: |
| Regeneration Sequence #2 |
| Cycle 1 |
Tank fill. Most likely 1 lb. of salt into potassium permanganate tank with a couple of chlorine tablets in it. |
| Cycle 2 |
Delay. (Time to allow water to dissolve chlorine tablets.) |
| Cycle3 |
Backwash. 12 minutes |
| Cycle4 |
Brine draw. (60 minutes to draw in salt/chlorinated water.) |
| Cycle 5 |
Rapid rinse |
| Cycle 6 |
Service |
The Auto Regeneration Sequence can trigger a second regeneration in three ways:
- Number of regeneration (like in the conditioner example above, every 5th regeneration)
- Time. Once every 30 days
- Number of gallons that pass through the unit. (Example: after every 10,000 gallons.) That is ARS!
So after all that explanation, we hope you're a little less confused by these features. And understand if you're not. The beauty of it is that Water-Right understands it and would be happy to talk to you further about it.
An Evolve Program dealer has access to programs that are traditionally offered by franchised water treatment companies, but without all the strings attached. Sales training, service training, lead generation programs, dealer and sales recognition programs, co-op advertising, and even long-term financing to help build the "cash intensive" rental side of the business. And an Evolve Program dealer has access to the most advanced water treatment equipment available — the Evolve Series. Not to mention highly competitive pricing on all types and varieties of water treatment equipment, equipment manufactured by the best in the industry: Clack, Fleck, and Autotrol. Private labeling is available as well.
